Within formal blocks of soapstone these icons are cut out in order to create space for note-papers, pencils and paperclips. Normally when working for Fair Trade the production and development of products is based on producers cultural traditions and natural resources. And to promote producers artistic, technological and organisational knowledge as a way of helping preserve and develop their cultural identity. In this case however Fair Trade wanted a series of desk accessories for a more upmarket design orientated customer. The look should be a bit more Western and less ethnic orientated as usual. Despite its minimal and Western look if observed from a distance, these pieces are without doubt made by hand by skilful Kenyan carvers. The small imperfections in the shapes and on the surfaces enrich and individualise each piece.
